Hi there!

If you’re new to my blog, welcome! My name is Maggie and I am a poet, cat parent, essayist, Endometriosis warrior, and more. If you’re a returning reader, hi again, and thank you so much for joining me again today. I am so excited about this blog post; I am going to teach you how to make my favorite lotion at home.

My lovely step-mom gave me lotion for Christmas two years ago and it was quickly a hit in our house. After getting the recipe and making a few minor adjustments, I created a healing lotion – one that revitalizes cracked skin, reduces burn marks, and gives your skin a deep and clean moisturization. Our skin is our largest organ so paying attention to what we are putting on our skin is incredibly important!

With my Endometriosis, SIBO, and chronic pain, I use heating pads and hot water bottles almost constantly. Over the years, and as I have needed higher heat levels, my skin began to show the effects of long-term heat use. I developed burn marks across my abdomen, right rib cage, and inner thighs. Here is just one example:

Maggie's burned skin

These burns are called erythema ab igne. According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, “erythema ab igne is an uncommon condition manifesting in a reticulated, or fishnet-like, pattern of hyperpigmentation on the skin resulting from chronic exposure to low levels of heat or infrared radiation. The name comes from Latin and can be translated [to mean] ‘redness from fire’. These lesions are usually asymptomatic but can be associated with pain, burning, and itching.”

The changes I have made to this lotion recipe have truly helped my burn scars tremendously, and I can make it at home! I know exactly what is in it, know that it won’t flare my Endo or any other illnesses, my skin soaks it up, and it feels silkily incredible. I truly believe this lotion has stopped my burns from progressing.

Two jars of homemade lotion

So how do you make this magnificent lotion? Well, it’s rather easy!

The first thing is first, make sure you have all the ingredients you need. You will need the following ingredients in equal parts: Shea butter, cocoa butter, refined coconut oil, and Jojoba oil. If you are just looking to try this lotion, I recommend a beginning with just a tablespoon to two tablespoons of each ingredient, in equal parts.

After you have collected all your ingredients, you will need to solely melt them in a double boiler. You can create a double boiler by boiling water in a large saucepan or pot; reduce heat to a simmer and place an empty glass bowl resting on top, covering the water below. You will then begin to melt the ingredients gently together. I recommend you begin the process with the thicker ingredients – the shea and cocoa butter. Then add the two oils.

I prefer jojoba oil as my second oil, but other oils like avocado oil do work. I prefer the jojoba oil because it has a deeper, more healing aspect. In my opinion, the jojoba oil takes this recipe from amazing lotion to rejuvenating, scar-reducing lotion!

Continue to melt the oils together until completely combined, stirring regularly. You don’t want any clumps, and you want all the oils to be blended entirely. Once all of the ingredients have been combined, remove the mixture from the heat and begin to let it cool. If you remove the glass bowl from the pot, be careful as there may be hot water condensation on the bottom.

Before the mixture becomes solid (this will take hours at room temperature and about an hour in the fridge), you can put a drop or two of essential oil into the mixture and stir. I recommend lavender essential oils for their skin-soothing qualities and that it tends to be a tolerable scent for most.

You can use either a hand mixer or a stand mixer for this step. As the mixture begins to solidify, transfer it to a mixing bowl. Begin to whip the lotion until it is completely cooled and is your preferred consistency. I start whipping my lotion on the lowest setting, slowing moving up to the highest setting, as though I were whipping egg whites. Once completely cooled, you can transfer to a small glass container.

I suggest starting with 1 or 2 tablespoons of each ingredient in equal parts to see if you like the lotion! For our family, it works fantastic on cracked hands, our feet, my stomach and thigh scars, and more, so we make a few large jars at a time. My biggest use for this cream is healing my heat burns from chronic pain. This has been better than any other scar-reducing cream I have tried.

We use it for our entire bodies, and we even have a face cream with similar ingredients but different ratios! Keep an eye out for that post, because trust me this stuff is better than Ponds.

Two jars of homemade lotion

I want to give a huge shout-out to my step-mom who gave us a tin of this lotion two years ago, a lotion we fell head over heels for! She provided the base recipe and blew me away with how incredible this lotion is. Don’t believe this is the best lotion in existence? Just try it!

Ingredients and quick instructions:

Equal parts:

⁃ Coconut oil

⁃ Shea butter

⁃ Cocoa butter

⁃ Jojoba oil* (see note)

1. Gather all of your ingredients

2. Create a double boiler – can be done with a glass bowl placed over a pot of simmering water.

3. Begin gently melting the ingredients together. I recommend starting with the thicker ingredients such as the shea and cocoa butter.

4. Melt gently until completely combined, stirring regularly.

5. Remove from heat and let the mixture begin to cool.

6. Before the mixture becomes solid, you can add a drop or two of essential oils.

7. Transfer the mixture to a mixing bowl and whip it like egg whites until it is cooled completely and your preferred consistency.

Note: Any similar oil can be used here. I have also used avocado oil and liked it, but I find the Jojoba oil has a deeper, more healing aspect that takes this recipe from lotion to rejuvenating, scar-reducing everyday lotion!
